Central Library, Stuttgart, Germany

Fantastic new library by Korean architect Eun Young Yi. His proposal was selected in 1999 from 235 competition entries as the plan for the new central library of the City of Stuttgart.

Yi has created a monolithic cube with two floors underground and nine above. Essentially all of the building, both inside and out is white. The main library floors circle an open-plan with the levels connected by open staircases. Books line the outer walls of each floor.

Now could this be the insparation for some exciting production design?

Ai Wei Wei

For the past 15 years, he has consistently been one of the most innovative figures in China’s art world. Through not just his own artistic production, but also via his curatorial and editorial work, his own blog and under his design company, FAKE Design, he is one of the most influential artists currently working in China

“We continue our curiosity with bicycle art.. Here is the latest installation by the activist Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. This piece is one of 21 works by Ai from 1983 to present that form the “Ai Weiwei Absent” exhibition, opened at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum at the end of October”.

“Forever Bicycles” is made of 1,000 bicycles installed in a 10-meter high space in a moving, abstract shape to symbolize the way in which the social environment in China is changing.

Ai Weiwei is known for example for his cooperation with Swiss architects Herzog & Meuron as the consultant for the 2008 Beijing Olympics Birds Nest building.

Ai is prohibited from leaving Beijing and cannot attend the exhibition. In a Reuters article, Ai was quoted as saying: “This is the first time I’m having an exhibition of my art works in the wider Chinese world. I’m really happy that it can be exhibited in Taiwan, because recently it has not possible to have an exhibition in my own place of residence. I have been notified that I won’t be allowed to go -- that was the outcome of my application -- so right now I cannot attend. But my family members will attend.”

Things seen

This section illustrates some interesting concept design from around the world

As my landline telephone gathers dust each day, I wonder if the classy ‘Hello Tomorrow’ concept will tempt me to use it more often! The thing is that snazzy smartphones and competitive cellphone rates lure us to use them more than the desk phones. But with features like a touchscreen, intuitive functions and customization options like home or office; this iteration looks at reviving the grandeur of the good ‘ole desk phone.

Fountains Abbey

This is a dull photograph from Fountains Abbey. Again the levels have been changed the background sky removed and a more dynamic sky has been added.

Some Photographers hate this but I don't care anything which helps to make better images is good with me.

Jousting Horses at Leeds Armouries

This is a picture of jousting horses at Leeds Armouries taken in the summer. I liked the picture but hated the background so I am trying to use Photoshop to make my poor photography a little better. Here I have removed the background and added a new layer containing the sky. Have also discovered how to use the dodge tool to darken and lighten the edges of the picture.

Learning all the time.

Through this attempt I have bleached out the sky behind the riders to make them stand out a bit more.

Apple from SONY

This is a concept design by Sony in Japan for a range of remote controls for things like Hi Fi TV etc. No word as to if, or when these would be manufactured but it is such a nice little concept. The little apples fit inside the Japanese style bowl which is also the charger.

Studio Dentsu create paint sculptures for Canon add

The creative studio dentsu, teamed up with photographer linden gledhill to create this series of paint sculptures using sound vibrations. the series was part of a campaign for canon’s pixma ink printer brand. the photographs and videos begin by wrapping a membrane around a small speaker. ink drops were placed on this membrane and the speaker was turned on. once it began to vibrate the ink begins to jump up and down. high-speed video cameras and still cameras were used to capture this including circling around the sculptures to see them from all angles. experimenting with different sounds and frequencies created the various pieces.

Studio Dentsu is, we have discovered one of the largest advertising agencies in Japan

New Work Developed Using Photoshop

After playing around with the text layers all letters were selected with the magic wand tool a new layer was created and the gradient tool was used to fill the letters with colour.

This is an idea for a dancing school poster. It uses text in Photoshop in a way I have never used it before, ie using the letters as a template to create the rainbow effect.

This is our first blog

This is the first post of our new blog it shows the model of the alien ship from close encounters of the third kind.

Dimensions:
Length, 63 inches; width, 38 inches; weight, shipping, 400 pounds; case: 74 x 74 inches
Materials:
Wood, plastic, and metal
This is the model of the alien Mother Ship used in the filming of the movie "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" (Columbia Pictures, 1977). The ship was conceived by Steven Spielberg, the film's director and screenwriter. It was made by a team headed by Gregory Jein, using model train parts and other kits. When filmed with special photographic and lighting effects, the model appears to be a huge, hovering craft. Rotating, colored lights underneath the ship added to its effects.

Looking closely at the model, one can find tiny hidden smaller models which are not seen when the Mother Ship appears in the film. These models were added by the model makers as internal "jokes." They include a Volkswagen bus, a submarine, the R2-D2 android, a U.S. mailbox, an aircraft, and a small cemetery plot.

Now on display at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum Washington USA
